With just under 40 years of experience teaching high school Science and QCS Preparation, Trevor Jones has led his staff and students with confidence and expert knowledge.
Former deputy principal Kathleen Janecek says Trevor has led a large staff of Science teachers in a low socioeconomic school for the past 30 years. As Head of Department, she says, Trevor “works with his teachers to ensure that both they and he are aware of how students are tracking through their learning, and monitors their progress”. “His dedication to individuals, be they students or teachers, has resulted in a culture where people know the expectation and strive to achieve it – preparing them for life beyond school,” Kathleen says. |
As a seasoned QCS marker, Trevor not only provided valuable learning experiences to his students as they prepared for this assessment but also passed on his knowledge to other teaching staff.
With the incoming Senior school QCS examination changes, he participated this year as a scrutiny panel member for the new QCAA writing teams in mock examinations in Chemistry. Since 2009, Trevor has chaired QCAA’s Chemistry State Panel and was a panellist before this. Trevor works within the Logan educational community, leading the local ENABLE cluster group for Chemistry that involves 13 schools, visiting primary schools and conducting science demonstrations to engage youngsters in Science. Over the years, Trevor has provided ample real-world learning experiences for his students by forging invaluable links to industry, allowing them to complete co-curricular certificate-based courses in surveying and measuring. Deputy Principal Kylie Steinhardt says Trevor also provided his students with opportunities to extend their Chemistry and Physics learning, by forging links to Griffith University through that institution’s extra-curricular GriffChem and GriffPhysics courses. But it has been at Marsden State High School where Trevor has made a lasting impact, running engaging Science Week activities, from rocket launches, science demonstrations and animal encounters to showcasing Science excellence. “Trevor is a passionate leader of Science who, throughout his career, has never failed to ensure that he is making a difference to the lives of the students he – and his staff – teach,” Kylie says. Kathleen notes that Trevor has “a deep understanding of and commitment to delivering the intended curriculum and has contributed significantly to the formulation of syllabus over time – and more recently our national curriculum – through a variety of forums and networks additional to his role,” Kathleen says.
“(This included) a role within the team of Science and Mathematics educators that made initial recommendations as part of the redevelopment of the Senior curriculum.” Congratulations Trevor on your nomination. |
