Tom Vieyra
Southport State High School
Students at Southport State High School (SSHS) are learning to track their sporting records using iPad and iTunes technology thanks to their teacher Tom Vieyra.
Tom’s work in his role as Sports Excellence Coordinator and his ability to create challenging and engaging learning programs has led to his nomination for the Queensland College of Teachers Excellence in Teaching Award.
Highly regarded sports professionals have aided Tom in creating a program for Sports Excellence Students at SSHS.
Tom draws on curriculum documents and research data to enhance the program, which is closely linked to the Long Term Athlete Development model, and aims to provide further opportunities for gifted students.
He has established a partnership with athletic performance company Acceleration, which has allowed SSHS students to use software platform Accelware to monitor their sporting development. The software also allows parents to view their child’s athletic progress.
Several sporting companies in the Southport community are also on board, adding value and excitement to the program.
Head of Department for Physical Education at SSHS Dave Mason commends Tom’s exceptional ability to create meaningful relationships and communicate professionally with all members of the school community.
“Tom places immense value on connecting genuinely with every person he comes in contact with,” Dave says.
Tom is currently working on an action research project as part of the Aspiring Leaders Program, to further enhance his ability to deliver a relevant, viable and sustainable Sports Excellence Program.
Congratulations Tom on your nomination.
