Tim Roe
Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre
"Inspiring Champions for the Bay"
Students who visit Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre (EEC) are being linked directly with scientists and universities through their involvement in a number of programs led by STEM teacher Tim Roe.
Tim has been nominated for the Queensland College of Teachers Excellence in Teaching Award.
Over 2034 students across 32 schools have participated in Tim’s hands-on and scientifically robust programs.
The Students On-board for Mangrove Watch program that Tim facilitates highlights tertiary education opportunities for students, and aims to promote better management and conservation of tidal wetlands in the area.
Tim delivered an IMPACT Science Project for students in Years 4 to 9, which required students to work scientifically, while contributing to a study of the effectiveness of zoning within Moreton Bay.
He has also conducted Professional Development presentations for teaching staff, and has been a guest speaker at several STEM celebration events.
Tim’s direct involvement with Marine Science investigations in Moreton Bay meant that over 270 students across Queensland were exposed to the real world possibilities of careers in science.
He believes that students using Citizen Science methods in Moreton Bay exposes them to the complexity of real ecosystems and provides great opportunities for critical thinking about the relative significance of multiple variables that impact their study questions.
Moreton Bay EEC Principal Dianne Aylward describes Tim as a dedicated, committed and passionate science teacher.
“Tim’s energy and charismatic teaching style, combined with his passion for sourcing state of the art equipment and cutting edge science techniques, supports deep learning with students,” she says.
Congratulations Tim on your nomination.
