Sue Gollan
Albany Hills State School
She is the driver of her school’s signature phonics program.
The Jolly Phonics program was introduced at Albany Hills State School after a concerted campaign by Sue Gollan to show her school leaders the difference the program would make for students.
The Prep Year coordinator undertook intensive research during her own time, and attended professional development, before convincing the school leadership team to implement the program, which is now being credited with helping students achieve significant outcomes.
She has led professional development for teachers and teacher aides, and assists individual teachers with the program.
Sue’s passion for teaching excellence and her leadership of teachers at the school are just some of the reasons she has been nominated for a Queensland College of Teachers Excellence in Teaching Award.
Her commitment is inspiring and leaves a long-lasting impression on her students, some of whom have returned in later years on work experience placements in her class.
All students in her class have individualised, published learning goals and their data is used to identify students who need early intervention in key learning areas and specialist support.
Like all Prep teachers at her school, Sue welcomes parents through all stages of the enrolment process, from parent information evenings through to January parent nights.
Parents also play a big part in her daily morning class routines.
Congratulations Sue on your nomination.
