Stuart Ablitt has gone above and beyond to ensure students with learning difficulties feel safe and supported in the classroom at Hills International College.
 
It was the special care that Stuart showed towards Darcy, a new preparatory student with level one autism spectrum disorder, that led to his nomination for the 2017 QCT Excellence in Teaching Award.
 
To help him transition smoothly into school, Stuart met with Darcy’s psychologist and occupational therapist to gain better insight into his individual emotional and educational needs.

Stuart also went to great lengths to ensure Darcy’s parents felt confident that their son would have the support he required, showing them how the classroom would be arranged and sending them regular updates on Darcy’s progress.
 
“He took great effort to ensure Darcy entered his schooling life with positivity and support,” Darcy’s mother said.
 
Stuart’s support of Darcy has been so successful that, after only one term, the school needed to update Darcy’s Individual Education Plan because he had already met all of his goals for the year. 

Darcy is just one of many students that Stuart has created a personalised learning plan for. He regularly devises teaching strategies that cater for audio, visual, and kinaesthetic learners, showing a special understanding of the fact that different students require different education.
 
Stuart has the unique ability to engage students in the learning process by integrating their interests into his planning and taking a genuine interest in their lives and development.
