Robert Ritchie
The Southport School
He’s the teacher who trekked across the globe to honour The Southport School’s 52 past students who died serving on the Western Front in World War One.
Robert Ritchie, The Southport School’s (TSS) Head of Humanities and Positive Psychology Researcher and Trainer, instigated Project 52 that took him to France to locate and photograph the graves of war veterans from TSS, following in the footsteps of his grandfather who also served on the Western Front in World War One.
This personal mission helped re-engage interest in TSS’s war history, culminating in the Band of Brothers’ Tour of Gallipoli and the Western Front by TSS cadets and parents.
In his 30 years as a Humanities teacher, Robert’s passion for the profession has seen him serve in a host of roles, including Head of Department, editor and contributing author of a Geography textbook, editor of Queensland Geographer, President of the Geography Teachers’ Association of Queensland, workshop presenter at GTAQ and AGTA conferences, and co-leader on History tours to Greece and Italy.
He is also a recipient of the Japan Foundation Award and the Asia Education Foundation’s Taste of China Scholarship, and this year, he has been nominated for a Queensland College of Teachers’ Excellent Leadership in Teaching and Learning Award.
Robert’s most recent passion is to research and present seminars to the TSS community towards a school-based Certificate in Positive Psychology. He has presented at national and international conferences on TSS’s Wellbeing initiatives.
TSS Headmaster Greg Wain says Robert is “an outstanding educator who has demonstrated accomplished leadership across curriculum and pastoral roles”.
Robert has undertaken a range of lifelong learning opportunities, adding a Master of Education (Leadership) degree and R2 Strengths Profiler accreditation to his undergraduate Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree. He is currently completing his Diploma in Positive Psychology and Wellbeing.
He is recognised as a servant leader and as a passionate, innovative educator.
Congratulations Robert on your nomination.
