Robert Cooke
The Southport School
“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” – Scott Adams
Rising as a school leader early in his career, Robert Cooke has been a Director of Music for the past 26 years, inspiring students to become professional musicians and countless colleagues and pupils to acquire his passion for the art form.
He believes music enables people to share a special universal language and should be a facet of every young person’s life.
The Southport School (TSS) principal Greg Wain says Rob’s favourite Scott Adams quote, written above, is realised in his approach to music education as a teacher and mentor.
“Rob is an outstanding and inspirational educator who enables effective teaching and learning of music with creativity and passion,” Greg says.
“Rob has a shining record of establishing, building and supporting outstanding teams of Performing Arts teachers that have ownership of their specialist area and have the confidence to grow and flourish in their art and pedagogy.
“Robert is an extraordinary member of the teaching profession.”
Rob, who moved to the Gold Coast to take on the role of Director of Performing Arts at All Saints Anglican School before moving to TSS, has been nominated for a Queensland College of Teachers Outstanding Contribution to Teaching Award.
He has been the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority panel chair for Music Extension since 2007 and has also worked as panel member for Music.
Industry leaders, such as jazz musicians James Morrison and Emma Pask, and composers Paul Jarman and Michael Faragher, have engaged with students as part of arts and music festivals that Rob has initiated and produced.
Rob connects students with community music ensembles and remains an active performer himself.
He is a role model outside of music through his involvement in outdoor education camps and participation in house competition cross-country runs and mentors early career teachers to foster academic excellence and a joy for collaborative music making.
Congratulations Rob on your nomination.
