Nadine Apps
Mareeba State School
Support given to teachers is one aspect of education that nurtures and improves student learning outcomes.
Nadine Apps leads her colleagues in this aspect at her school in Mareeba. She is responsible for the implementation of Explicit Instruction at her school, by modelling exemplary teaching practice and coaching staff to teach implementing the strategy to the highest standard. Not only is Nadine a teaching coach, but she is also an active classroom teacher in Prep. By practicing what she preaches, Nadine has shown a high standard of educational practice, as reflected in her achievement data. |
She also acts as a mentor teacher to beginning teachers, supporting them throughout the start of their journey.
Nadine was successful in the implementation of a reading recovery program for three hundred students who were identified through classroom data. She uses the data to improve student outcomes for those students, through co-ordination with classroom teachers and teacher aides. With this data, she also creates learning material to be used in the classroom. In order to be a successful leader at Mareeba State School, Nadine also attends professional development. She uses the knowledge gained at these sessions to improve herself and her practice, which benefits not only herself but also the teachers she coaches and mentors. Nadine has also self-nominated in a pilot program for high calibre teachers in Far North Queensland, like herself. Teacher aides also benefit from Nadine’s expertise through targeted professional development sessions aimed at improving the reading levels of students. Principal Mandy Whybird says Nadine is well liked and respected at the school. “She has a deep understanding of both curriculum and best practice techniques for delivering this,” Ms Whybird says. “Nadine is generous with her time and resources, and commits to supporting her peers to improve their own practice.” Nadine often communicates student expectations and results to the wider school community. Congratulations Nadine on your nomination. |
