Luke Van Leuveren is the Director of Teaching and Learning (K-6) at Canterbury College, and in this role, he has realised a number of transformations at the school.
Luke is well-read and up-to-date with contemporary educational research, and he is able to apply his knowledge to his own school context.
Luke has driven the revision of the school’s approach to literacy and has gained support from the community in doing so.
He has also transformed approaches to learning in the early years through his development of play-based curriculum.
Luke’s decision making is attuned to his school context and sustainability focused.
He knows the impact of his decisions and ensures they will bring long-term benefits to the school.
Luke has developed assessment schedules to facilitate analysis and use of student data to guide teaching practice, and has introduced a number of high-impact teaching strategies to his colleagues.
Luke has also played a key role in the development of scope and sequence documentation across subject areas and has streamlined assessment approaches.
He has also introduced professional “pop-up learning” sessions, where he provides professional development and learning opportunities for staff. These are well attended and received, and are recorded to provide access for all interested staff.
As a result of his efforts, Luke has gained the respect of the school and local community, and his willingness to go the extra mile for staff and students has been recognised by parents, colleagues and students alike.
