Kelvin Grove State College

Lauren Hovelroud is innovating the ways in which English and History are taught at both Kelvin Grove State College and across Queensland schools.
 
As chair of the Kelvin Grove State College Literacy Strategic Committee, Lauren has worked collaboratively with her colleagues to inform the school’s literacy policy and to develop a digital repository of literacy resources.
 
Literacy has been one of Lauren’s key focuses, particularly since she completed her Master of Education degree with a research focus grounded in a whole-school approach to literacy for students ranging from Preparatory to Year 12.

To promote critical thinking and innovation in the classroom, Lauren designed and implemented a project-based learning approach that has seen her students tackle fun and challenging situations in the history classroom, like how to manage a ‘zombie apocalypse.’
 
Beyond the classroom, Lauren has contributed to the Kelvin Grove State College community in a variety of ways. She coordinates the Senior Student Representative Council and organises various school camps, charity initiatives and community events throughout the year.
 
Lauren is also the school’s Humanities Coordinator, which makes her responsible for the History curriculum for Years 6 to 12. She voluntarily organises and presents weekly skill-building workshops for her teaching colleagues and has taken on the role of mentor to some of her less experienced colleagues in both the English and Humanities faculties. 

Lauren is also collaborating with the wider community of teachers in Queensland. She is a Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority panellist for Modern History, and she is also working with the Authority to develop support resources for the new Senior English syllabus.
