Kristelle Merson is making a difference at Capalaba State College (CSC).
Employing the latest research driven strategies to support her teaching methods, students in Kristelle’s classes are achieving extraordinary results. Her dedication to improving student attendance and academic results, achieving sporting success, and improving overall student health and wellbeing has led to her nomination for the 2017 QCT Excellence in Teaching Award. |
Recently, Kristelle began administrating the College’s High Performance Sports Program, where 100 percent of Year 7 students are achieving a B grade or above.
Kristelle has designed the program to provide high level sport specific coaching within the Health and Physical Education curriculum. Students are taught targeted skills and theory in their chosen sport of Volleyball, Basketball or Football as well as extra-curricular skills such as time-management, nutrition and balancing sport commitment with study. Kristelle holds a level 1 Volleyball coaching certificate as well as over 5 years of touch football experience which she uses to coach the College’s Touch Football and Oz Tag teams. A high level sportswoman herself, Kristelle has over 10 years of swimming coaching experience and assists the College’s swim program and sports carnivals. Her insightful and skilled coaching also contributed to a rapid increase in the results of the High Performing Sport Volleyball program which has resulted in three teams becoming Queensland champions in 2017. Kristelle is an integral member of the CSC English team, who are currently revolutionising the English program. After specialised professional development, she is employing new upper two band reading strategies including text dependent questioning and complex texts. Kristelle monitors student performance on a weekly basis and uses this information to target her teaching and improve academic results. Kristelle is devoted to the students of CSC supporting student with curricular and extracurricular opportunities. She also coaches the debate team, who were finalists in the Queensland Debating Union Championships after defeating more experienced teams from other high schools.
