Kerry Bullock
Queensland Academies - Science, Mathematics and Technology
The percentage of students achieving the highest possible English results as part of their International Baccalaureate Diploma has more than doubled over two years under the leadership of Kerry Bullock at the Queensland Academies – Science, Mathematics and Technology (QASMT).
Kerry takes a courageous approach to leadership: to establish team trust she initially underwent a coaching session in front of staff, leading to a 100 per cent participation rate by teachers in the school’s new coaching and feedback strategy.
She has created a collaborative environment in which every English class has at least one team-teaching class timetabled. Students are taught that “every English teacher is their teacher”.
Kerry’s leadership vision, her commitment to teaching and academic excellence and her creation of a high-expectations culture are among the reasons she has been nominated for a Queensland College of Teachers Excellent Leadership in Teaching and Learning Award.
Through her analysis of school data, Kerry identified that the top 10 per cent of the school’s students consistently under-performed against stretched targets and following further research, she introduced a strategy that saw alumni students work one-on-one with the top current pupils.
The QASMT Head of Department for English has also engaged key teachers to lead high-performing students in a weekly after-school Challenge Program, which has fostered collaboration among students.
Congratulations Kerry on your nomination.
