Judy Smith
Bray Park State High School
Students at Bray Park State High School (BPSHS) are requesting to be in Judy Smith’s Maths class.
Described by her colleagues as being a committed, vibrant, gifted teacher, Judy’s joyful enthusiasm means teachers and students strive to learn with her. Head of Department for Mathematics at BPSHS Chris Powell says one of the first things he noticed about Judy was her outstanding reputation. “Her passion for education shines through everything she does,” says Chris. |
Judy’s inspiring dedication and passion for teaching has led to her nomination for the 2017 QCT Outstanding Contribution to Teaching Award.
As an integral part of the school’s chaplaincy program for the past 20 years, Judy has made a profound impact on the wellbeing of her students. She also runs a lunchtime JAM (Jesus and Me) club for students, which is now in its 25th year. “I have seen many past students visit the staffroom just to catch up with Mrs Smith and I am confident that this will continue for years to come as a result of Judy Smith’s profound influence on her students and the next generation of educators,” explains colleague Janeen Knight. “Regularly Judy is found in the hallway assisting students before school and during breaks.”
Her mindful interactions with students that promote engaged learning and her open-door policy on helping students have set the standard for teachers at BPSHS. Judy makes the heart-warming effort to know each student by name and as an individual. She gets to know their likes, dislikes, interests and hopes for the future, and aims to incorporate these factors into classroom learning. Her extra-curricular involvement also goes far beyond what is expected of a teacher. Judy trains interschool sporting teams and students in the school gym, eagerly participates in teacher-student sporting competitions and has accompanied students on overseas school trips during the school holidays for many years. “The feedback from students is always positive and Judy’s organisation and commitment to this program is key to its success,” says Chris Powell, Head of Department for Mathematics at BPSHS. Judy’s outstanding work has and continues to influence the lives of students, teachers, parents and the greater BPSHS community. Congratulations Judy on your nomination. |
