John Tabrett
Bray Park State High School
John Tabrett’s leadership in the Health and Physical Education department has seen it become a pioneer faculty in the implementation of a new pedagogical framework at Bray Park State High School.
It has also helped students reach new heights on the sporting field, thanks to partnerships, programs and opportunities he has overseen. John and his staff have created learning environments which focus on collaboration and emphasise the use of digital literacies. John and his staff have seen student outcomes enhanced through a shift towards an active learning partnership between teacher, student and the community. Enhancing the learning experience through deliberate use of digital technologies to accelerate learning in both practical and theoretical environments, students are developing the skills to be creative, connected and collaborative problem solvers. Strong relationships with community groups and organisations outside of sport, such as Queensland Rail and the Brisbane City Council, have been forged by him. John has also led the schoolwide implementation of the New Pedagogies for Deep Learning, with HPE the lead faculty. Principal Kirsten Ferdinands says John is a skilled and innovative leader. “John has shown an exceptional level of knowledge and skills to lead both the teaching and learning agenda within his faculty, along with an energy and enthusiasm to lead improvement, innovation and change across the whole school,” Kirsten says. “John’s passion and unrelenting focus on student sport and access to sport for all, has resulted in significant opportunities for all students.” John has also led the development of a strength and conditioning based Athlete Development Program, which allows students opportunities to reach further in their athletic potential.
Partnerships with Bray Park PCYC, Weightlifting Queensland and Queenlsand Rugby Union (Sporting Schools Pilot Program: VIVA 7’s) has seen students excel in new challenges. The successful implementation of the VIVA 7’s program has seen the growth of Rugby 7’s to over 70 boys and girls from Years 7 – 12. Congratulations John on your nomination. Written by Mark Zita |
