Jill Margerison
The Southport School
She is a globally recognised teacher invited to speak at state, national and international conferences.
She has her own teaching YouTube channel and blog, been published in Australian and international education journals and magazines, has an Asia Education Foundation Fellowship and this year was chosen by the Federal Government to represent Australia as an education leader at the South East-Asian Education Summit in Singapore.
The Southport School English teacher Jill Margerison is constantly striving to develop curriculum and teaching practices that provide learning opportunities for her students that are engaging, relevant, innovative and inspiring.
These are just some of the reasons she has been nominated for a Queensland College of Teachers Excellence in Teaching Award.
If you step in to her English classroom you’ll find a buzzing, creative hub filled with student work – giant paper mind maps, props, vocabulary and concept flash cards – and a life-sized poster of William Shakespeare.
She uses visual and musical teaching strategies to develop student memory retention and facilitate a positive learning mindset.
To further engage her students, she encourages them to share their classroom knowledge on discussion forums and online classroom community platforms, including one for those interested in social entrepreneurial activities to help third world countries.
In 2014 she was selected to lead an International Boys School Coalition Action Research project and last year she was awarded a fellowship through The Asia Education Foundation to implement an online buddy project with a Malaysian school.
Jill, who speaks and presents at workshops across the globe on facilitating educational environments that enable students to take ownership of their own learning, has also been selected as a trial examiner for external assessment in Queensland.
TSS principal Greg Wain says Jill “is an outstanding educator who enables effective teaching and learning in English”.
Congratulations Jill on your nomination.
