Jacques du Toit
Riverside Christian College
He’s been named one of the top 25 Google Education Group (GEG) leaders in the Asia Pacific, he leads TeachMeets on the Fraser Coast and presents at conferences nationally and internationally, he has nearly 5000 Twitter followers and he is currently studying a Master of Education program looking at digital innovation and knowledge networks.
Jacques du Toit’s boundless energy and passion for teaching, and for delivering the best practice for his students in the classroom, are just some of the reasons he has been nominated for a Queensland College of Teachers Excellence in Teaching Award.
The Head of Humanities and Business at Riverside Christian College in Maryborough, who moved about a decade ago from South Africa where he worked in logistics, says he’s “a teacher forever”.
“I absolutely love teaching,” Jacques says.
“Every day is different, every day is a new challenge – no day is the same in teaching.
“I just love forming relationships with the kids and seeing how they develop over time and being able to share my passion for learning with them, and just trying new things.”
Jacques ensures he stays connected with educators from across the world through the various digital platforms he participates on.
He has also been involved with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority as a panellist and external marker.
This year he won an Australian Council for Educational Leaders New Voice Scholarship.
At Riverside Christian College he pioneered the school’s first “paperless classroom”, his students have attained results significantly above the state average and he has been the driving force behind the World’s Greatest Shave charity fundraiser, raising in excess of $12,000 since 2011.
As the Head of Humanities and Business Jacques has ensured his colleagues feel supported in their planning and program implementation and showcases their efforts at events.
He also delivered the keynote speech at this year’s Queensland conference for The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
QCT Director John Ryan thanked Mr du Toit for his vision, his innovation, his leadership and for his commitment to students and the profession.
Winners in the QCT Excellence in Teaching Awards will be announced on 27 October, on the night before World Teachers’ Day is celebrated in Australia.
Congratulations Jacques on being a finalist.
