Engagement in STEM subjects has become a curricular priority in the past few years, and Emily Want fully embraces this trend.

She is knowledgable and passionate in the field of biology and general sciences, and this shows in her effective planning of her lessons.

Her learning experiences challenge the students to go further with their learning, in a way that caters for their differing needs.

Some of these learning experiences include an ecosystem analysis on water samples from the Kedron Brook, where Year 9 Science students took measurements of pH levels, dissolved oxygen, and investigated the turbidity. 

Her Year 9's also visually observed photosynthesis through the collection of carbon dioxide in the presence of both light, and no light, to discover which plant was going through photosynthesis and which was respiring. 

Emily's Year 11 biology students are using colourometry to investigate the wavelength of light during photosynthesis and spectrometry to observe which light – halogen, incandescent, LED and CFL – emits which wavelength.

Emily makes sure her learning experiences are accessible to all learners, in order for them to maximise their learning potential.

In combination with positive behaviour strategies, this ensures Emily’s students are supported every step of the way. Her support also extends to conducting after-school tutorials and personal feedback sessions outside of school hours.

She consistently improves her knowledge by attending and conducting various professional development sessions related to the key learning area of Science, especially biology and technology.

She also actively participates in community events such as the Green Heart Schools program and the Brisbane Science Festival.
