Daniel Celm
Brisbane Grammar School
A former Manager of Corporate Improvement and Market Research at the Brisbane City Council, Daniel Celm is having an impressive impact as a teacher of Economics at Brisbane Grammar School (BGS).
Speaking about his transition to teaching, Daniel says he always had an interest in the development of others and helping people get the best from themselves. “I have a genuine love of learning and a passionate belief in the value of education. I wanted to work with young people who will become the future generation and leaders of society,” Daniel says. |
Students are challenged and inspired by Daniel, who consistently asks them to share and explain their thinking, encouraging a deeper consideration and discussion of issues. His students also set their own goals in relation to relevant cognitive and metacognitive processes, including peer-assessment and self-assessment of progress.
Daniel keeps his classroom engaging for students, expertly balancing structure and real-world experiences with competition and humour. “I believe one of the greatest impediments to learning is boredom, so I engage students by finding out about them and their interests and bringing that into the classroom. I bring industry experience to help students understand how the theories they are learning relate to real-world issues in organisations and workplaces,” Daniel says. |
Daniel has been praised for his capacity to warrant conclusions through the use of evidence, to discuss them through reference to the school’s elaborations of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, and for being a positive role model and sounding board for students.
He actively seeks robust and critical feedback from colleagues and is a generous contributor to the growth of his peers through his modelling of collaborative professionalism. |
“I have learned the importance of relationships from my previous roles and try to ensure I manage and build positive relationships with students, parents and colleagues to help achieve the best outcomes for students and BGS,” Daniel says.
As well as his teaching role, Daniel dedicates significant time to other activities at BGS ensuring he is busy inside and outside the classroom. This includes serving as a debating coach and tennis manager; working with boys through the Gender Respect Committee and helping coordinate students in the ESSI Money Competition run by the Financial Basics Foundation. BGS Principal Anthony Micallef says Daniel’s leadership experience has contributed greatly to the collaborative professional culture of the school. “He has brought a wealth of industry knowledge to his role which he has infused into his teaching of Economics,” Anthony says. Congratulations Daniel on your nomination.
