Christa Miyoni
Trinity Lutheran College
This beginning teacher has reached beyond Queensland classrooms to share her talent and passion for teaching with her dedication and time for education within disadvantaged communities in developing countries.
Christa Miyoni of Trinity Lutheran College on the Gold Coast has been nominated for the 2017 QCT Excellence in Beginning to Teach Award. Christa has extended on her teaching skills and professionalism by facilitating the use of computers and technology for teachers and students in developing countries such as Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Recently, she was invited and conducted full-day sessions for teachers in remote PNG on the use and application of IT within the classroom environment. |
Described by her colleague as being “particularly innovative” with technology and classroom design, Christa ensures her classroom is engaging, inclusive and inspiring to motivate learning among the diversity of her students.
For example, Christa used blackboard paint on portable surfaces providing students with alternative ways to write. She eagerly seeks feedback from her peers and more experienced colleagues to guide her in teaching students with additional needs. Christa shares newly discovered teaching resources with her colleagues, as well as numerous e-learning tools, which she has created herself, making it easier to reinforce more difficult concepts. TLC Principal, Tsae Wong says “Christa is an outstanding beginning teacher, who is a wonderful role model for all students and young people. She is a consummate educator beyond her age and years of experience. She [has an] understanding [of] the art of teaching and is growing daily in the science of teaching.” In her first year of teaching, Christa volunteered to be a part of the college’s data committee and employed her advanced computing skills to critically analyse student achievement data to produce graphs and trend sets that clearly displayed results over time. She used these skills to teach college staff and teachers from other schools how to interpret this data and utilise it in future planning. “She enjoys a challenge and came prepared to our first meeting with data already collated and reviewed,” says Head of the Early and Junior Years at TLC Carolyn Thistlethwaite. Being a member of the Colleges’s IT committee, Christa has presented at staff meetings and workshops and has represented TLC at a national seminar, building and sharing on her comprehensive knowledge of technology. Congratulations Christa on your nomination. |
