Beginning teacher Brooke Hart-Moore is leading a STEM education revolution on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
The Southport State High Independent Public School (SSHIPS) teacher is providing students with university-level experience in her tremendous efforts to ‘future-proof’ the next generation. As the South-East Region Supervisor of the Department of Education’s STEM Girl Power Camp, Brooke is championing the involvement of young women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. She actively engages students in lunchtime and extra-curricular activities including robotics competitions, trivia challenges, conferences, science and engineering challenges, and the list goes on. |
Her outstanding commitment to involving students in these subject areas has led to SSHIPS being awarded the STEM Ambassador School of Excellence Award in 2017 by Griffith University, after they hosted the GU STEM Cup in 2017 – which they hosted again this year.
Brooke’s student-centred classrooms promote collaboration and the integration of technology in a safe environment. Students are encouraged to think critically and creative to problem solve and lead their own learning. Her supervisor John Parer says Brooke demonstrates teaching excellence and is committed to building the capacities of her colleagues. “She continues to share developed resources and showcases best practice in the success of our STEAM elective and project-based learning with fellow teachers,” says John. Brooke facilitates training sessions for STEAM leaders of Year 6 and 7 students in the surrounding areas in her pursuit to close the gap between local primary feeder schools and their understanding of STEAM. Southport SHS will be the host for the first Queensland VEX Robotics Competition to be held early November this year. This is an internationally recognsied competition and four teams from this event will continue on to Nationals, held in Melbourne this December, to represent Queensland and their school. In her role as STEAM Coordinator, Brooke will be managing the event collaboratively with international VEX representatives and other participating schools within the Gold Coast community and from around Queensland. To support Southport SHS teams in preparing for the competition, Brooke has also started a Robotics Club on Tuesday afternoons as an extra-curricular program. Congratulations Brooke on your nomination. |
