Allan Wai
Southport State High School
Engineering has become an elective for students in Year 7 at a Gold Coast high school where an outstanding early career teacher has been nominated for a state teaching award.
Southport State High School (SSHS) Engineering, Mathematics and Physics teacher, and STEM Coordinator, Allan Wai has steeped students in hands-on learning experiences through the Griffith University STEM Ambassadors Program and Cutting-Edge conference, as well as inter-school competitions.
Under his leadership SSHS has the highest rate of student participation on the Gold Coast for the Griffith University STEM Ambassadors Program and he has fostered learning opportunities in his Year 7 Engineering elective for students to use coding and robotics.
Allan has also been nominated for an ‘A Day Made Better’ Award, where exceptional teachers are nominated by parents, students and fellow staff members to be in the running to win a classroom prize pack valued at over $5000.
He regularly spends his afternoons tutoring at the school’s homework club and has been praised for the positive rapport he has developed with students, both inside and outside the classroom.
Congratulations Allan on your nomination.
