Every day welcomes a positive new beginning in Abby Sturm’s classroom.

The Year 2 teacher, who goes above and beyond to provide inclusion support for all students, has been nominated for the 2017 QCT Excellence in Beginning to Teach Award.

Abby’s classroom environment at Humbybong State School in Redcliffe features a variety of accommodations for individual students and their needs, including an ASD student who struggles particularly with controlling his verbal and physical behaviour.

Sloped desks, finger grips, fine-motor gadgets, an interactive whiteboard and several digital technology options are available to help students discover their own learning styles.

Abby works as an integral member of the Year 2 teaching team, who have successfully implemented the New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (NPDL) strategy that allows students to learn new skills, develop perseverance and most importantly ‘give it a go’.
