Valerie Dayes
Mareeba State School
Explicit instruction is a pedagogical framework that has been widely adopted across Queensland, and Valerie Dayes exhibits leadership in coaching staff members in this method.
Valerie leads in-school professional development sessions in best practices related to explicit teaching, and facilitates observation opportunities between staff members. She also co-ordinates sessions that help teachers understand Australian Curriculum requirements. Differentiation is another key factor Valerie leads in, by providing resources to ensure all students have equal opportunity in accessing content. |
Not only teachers benefit from Valerie’s efforts, teacher aides are also part of professional development sessions she conducts.
They receive equal opportunity to understand the nuances of explicit instruction, and other aspects of the curriculum. Valerie has also implemented learning programs that have benefitted the students. She has integrated other reading programs for high achieving Year 3 students, and implemented a reading inquiry process across the school. Principal Mandy Whybird says she has witnessed Valerie’s dedication in helping staff and students. “Valerie has made a difference to the outcomes of a vast number of students through the invaluable work she does with staff.” Congratulations Valerie on your nomination.
