Fei Xue Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology
All of Fei Xue’s students at the Queensland Academies – Science, Mathematics and Technology (QASMT) campus achieved As in a Mandarin Essay in the 2014 and 2015 International Baccalaureate (IB) exams, and consistently achieve results above the world average in the challenging IB program.
The QASMT Mandarin teacher believes that schools are the gateway for students to experience the wider world and it’s a school’s obligation to produce graduates who are also global citizens.
Fei ensures that her students are enriched by experience aspects of Chinese culture, establishing a Mandarin Club that also hosted a Mandarin Karaoke Competition, which her nomination notes “was a magical experience for students”.
Her dedication and unrelenting motivation to instil Chinese culture within her students’ lives are two of the reasons she has been nominated for a Queensland College of Teachers Excellence in Teaching Award.
Fei also undertakes self-funded professional development and researches world-best teaching strategies to continually improve her practice.
To enhance her students’ learning she has built a relationship with the Confucius Institute at the Queensland University of Technology and has established a Confucius classroom at QASMT.
She is also a member of the Modern Languages Teachers’ Association of Queensland and the Chinese Language Teachers’ Association of Queensland, where she contributes professionally by sharing resources with her current and previous colleagues as well as other members.
Fei’s reflections on differences in educational philosophies between western and Asian countries have been published, and she has helped students on academic review to graduate successfully with her support.
